Mos Def @ Yost

Saw Most Def 12/22 at Yost.

There were a couple of songs that were pretty great and he did his freestyle stuff.  Think it was pretty good for a hip hop show but think a lot of my friends weren’t into it.   Kinda bummed he didn’t do ms fat booty.

Just don’t think hip hop shows are that good compared to rock shows.

Concert: Camera Obscura

Watched this after Game 6 of the NBA finals and I was a bit too amped up to be listening to them.  Turns out it was probably for the better as their melodic tunes calmed me down.  They are kind of a swaying side to side band since there’s nothing really too uptempo about them but they’re a chill band to listen to.

Impressive that they had a mis function with the acoustic guitar so we got a electric version of almost all the songs. Didn’t even know the closing song so got to go back and listen to that one again.

Music: Fitz and The Tantrums

Went to their 3/6 concert at House of Blues Sunset.  It was a long ass wait until they came on. Got there at 7 and they didn’t go on until after 9.

Didn’t know much of their music beforehand but they were pretty good. I liked the fact they part of their music is just a jam session. Their music is kinda like a pop soul type music. Most impressive thing about the band is how much energy that girl brings. Best usage of a tambourine I’ve ever seen. She was going pretty wild with it.

Concert: Metric 12/9 Fox Pomona

Pretty good show. They played a lot of their 1st album, Fantasies, which was awesome. I’ve been listening to their 2nd album, Synthetica, so forgot how great Fantasies.

One thing that really struck me was that the guitarist is bad-ass talented. He gets lots of time to do some impressive solo work which I’ve never noticed listening to them. That was a little bit eye opening and something to pay attention to going forward.

Last song was an acoustic version of “Gimme Sympathy”. The acoustic version sounded great, never paid much attention to the lyrics before and now that I know lyrically pretty nice. Plus it helped that they gave a little background spiel on the meaning of the song. It’s about pushing past the doubters and just going for. They moved from Canada to LA to try and make it.

One thing I didn’t feel was having their music crescendo-ing and taking me to a new high. A little bit surpised there there wasn’t that over the top feeling.

I listened to Fantasies as I trained for a half-marathon so it’ll always have a place in my memory. Now I’ve got a concert memory to go with it.

Big ups to KCRW for having ticket giveaways for members.
